Yes! e-bikes are legal in Australia. The only limitation is where they can be ridden. Bikes that meet national e-bike standards can be used on public roads and bike paths, while non-compliant devices may be restricted to private property.

To be considered legal for on-road use, electric bikes must:

• Be pedal-assisted only — the motor can only activate when the rider is pedalling (pedelec)
• Throttle-only operation is not permitted on public roads only private property unless it does not exceed 6km/h
• Have a maximum continuous output of 250W (some exceptions apply — for example, NSW allows up to 500W for certain classifications)
• Be not capable of an assisted top speed of more than 25km/h — after this, the motor must cut out
• Comply with all general road rules, including helmet use, speed limits and designated bike paths

Most negative media coverage relates to non-compliant or modified devices that exceed these limits or operate more like electric motorcycles.

Devices without pedals, with high-powered motors, or with unrestricted throttles are typically restricted to private property or off-road use unless they are registrable motorcycles.

An E-Bike (Electric Bicycle) is a pedal-assisted bicycle that uses an electric motor to help you while riding — you still pedal, but the motor provides extra power for hills and longer rides. It’s designed to function like a traditional bicycle and typically complies with bicycle laws, motor and speed outputs depending on your local regulations.

In contrast, an E-Motorcycle is powered entirely by a motor with "throttle only" and does not require pedalling. Because of this, it’s legally classified as a motor vehicle and generally requires registration, licensing and road approval — just like a petrol motorcycle.

Some high-powered electric bikes look similar to motorcycles, which causes confusion. However, if a model exceeds local speed or power limits or operates purely by throttle, it is not considered a bicycle and may be restricted to off-road or private property use only.

Ampd Bros considers these high-powered units off-road use only products, and they should not be operated by children under 16 without parental supervision. Always wear a helmet and ride safely.

Summary:

Yes. Throttles themselves are legal on e-bikes in Australia. The catch is speed: on an EN15194 road-compliant e-bike, a throttle can only assist up to 6km/h without pedalling (a walk-assist, for pushing the bike or moving off). Above 6km/h, the motor must only assist while you pedal.

If a throttle lets your bike do more than 6km/h without pedalling, the bike is no longer road-compliant it's classified as an off-road device and can only be ridden on private property.

Simply put an "X" model is a Cross bar step over frame design, where as our "S" models are step through frames.

All our E-Bikes come securely boxed and are shipped 80% assembled and do require some assembly. Should you need assistance you can checkout our Tutorials & Tips page for assembly videos or you can also refer to a store near you for bike builds and service.

Standard shipping normally takes 3-5 days. Express shipping is available on all small domestic orders (for an additional charge). 

Bulky freight such as E-Bikes will typically take substantially longer to deliver as more manual handling is required so with this in mind on average to most major cities is approx a 5-10day's. For more rural areas, NT, WA or TAS you could expect to see 14 days or more for your order to arrive.

International shipping times depend on the products and destination.

Yes, we currently ship to most countries including New Zealand, the UK, Europe and the USA.

For small articles you can view available shipping options and rates directly at checkout. If no pricing is displayed for your destination, please contact our team for a custom more accurate quote. For large items such as bikes please contact us for a detailed quote.

All international orders are shipped from Australia. Customers purchasing from outside of Australia are responsible for all applicable import duties, taxes, customs fees, GST, or local charges imposed by their destination country. These costs are not included in our product prices or shipping fees shown at checkout. You must also consider that items requiring chargers are supplied with "Australian" 240v wall plugs.

Ampd Bros does not cover or reimburse any of these charges. It is the customer’s responsibility to understand and comply with local import regulations before placing an order. Failure to pay these charges may result in delays, returned shipments, or forfeited orders — for which Ampd Bros cannot be held liable.

Yes, however we can only deliver small items to P.O Boxes as large items such as Bikes or items over 20kg are not accepted by Australia Post. If you enter a P.O Box on your order for a large item such as a bike, we will contact you for alternative addresses which may delay your order further.
